The Red Star is Sci-Fi/Fantasy comic based in a country highly analogous culturally and geographically to the Soviet Union of the latter half of the twentieth century. The United Republics of the Red Star occupies a similar place on the world map as the real life U.S.S.R.. Their enemy at the beginning of the book, AlIstaan, occupies the same area as Afghanistan. The military uniforms are similar, many of the character names are Russian in origin, and some of the mystical elements have their roots in Russian lore.
The military forces of the U.R.R.S. have fully incorporated magic into their arsenal of weapons, providing power sources, energy beams of massive power, shields, and teleportational gates among other effects. Sorcerers, called Warkasters, have their own corps within the command structure, though they are usually integrated with either aircraft or infantry troops when going into battle. Spells, called protocols, are kast with extreme military precision.
The source of this magical energy has been revealed to be P.H.E. Post Human Energy, the energy generated by the enslaved souls of all humans that have died before. The crew of the Skyfurnace R.S.S. Konstantinov have mutinied and gone into the spirit realm in order to lay siege to the fortress of the Imprisoned Afterlife.
Despite it being one continuous story, The Red Star is in its third Book or incarnation. The first nine issues (2000), plus intermediary stories, were published by Image comics. For the second volume (2003), the first three issues were published by Archangel Studios in conjuction with CGE/CrossGen Comics. The last two issues of volume two as well as the third book/volume (2006), Sword of Lies, are published by Archangel Studios alone.
The story continues...

The Property is a work that will inspire, fascinate, and delight readers and critics alike. Savvy and insightful, elegant and subtle, Rutu Modans second full-length graphic novel is a triumph of storytelling and fine lines. After the death of her son, Regina Segal takes her granddaughter Mica to Warsaw, hoping to reclaim a family property lost during the Second World War. As they get to know modern Warsaw, Regina is forced to recall difficult things about her past, and Mica begins to wonder if maybe their reasons for coming arent a little different than what her grandmother led her to believe. Modan offers up a world populated by prickly seniors, smart-alecky public servants, and stubborn women-a world whose realism is expressed alternately in the absurdity of peoples behavior and in the complex consequences of their sacrifices. Modans ever-present wit is articulated perfectly in her clear-line style, while a subtle, almost muted color palette complements the true-to-life nuances of her characterization. Exit Wounds made a huge splash for this signature combination of wit, style, and realism, and The Property will cement Modans status as one of the foremost cartoonists working today.

ONE TRICK RIP-OFF/DEEP-CUTS is 288 pages of raw power, of which over 150 pages are comprised of new, rare, and never before seen stories created during POPEs time traveling the world in the 90s. Thomas keeps trying to pick up women, but is summarily rejected. He has not yet understood how feminism has changed the world; the women he meets are now quite direct and demanding, and his technique - whether it be in the street, in line at the movies, or pretending to do surveys - is utterly out of date. Little by little however, he begins approaching women with a bit more delicacy and decency, but he still finds himself in awkward, impossible situations...

This fall, Darren Aronofsky - the acclaimed director behind such critically acclaimed films as Pi and Requiem for a Dream - releases The Fountain, his most ambitious movie yet. Now, in time for the films greatly anticipated debut, is the softcover edition of last years sought-after THE FOUNTAIN graphic novel, which earned artist Kent Williams (Blood: A Tale, Havok/Wolverine: Meltdown) an Eisner Award nomination for Best Painter. An odyssey about one mans thousand-year struggle to save the woman he loves, The Fountain follows Thomas as he feverishly travels through three distinct eras: as a 16th century conquistador battling a fierce Mayan army, as a present-day scientist searching for a cure for his wifes mortal disease and as a future explorer seeking to uncover the secrets of a dying star. The Fountain graphic novel is a sister-project to the film, which is released by Warner Bros. Pictures and Regency Enterprises and stars Tony-Award-winner Hugh Jackman (The Boy from Oz, X-Men) and Oscar-winner Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener, The Mummy). Using the same story as its seed but stretched instead upon the limitless canvas of the comics medium, the graphic novel provides an insiders accompaniment to the movie, providing perhaps the ultimate directors cut.
